The McMillan Conservation Fund

Foundations

In honour of Mike, our beloved son, brother, and passionate conservationist, the McMillan Conservation Fund has been established. Growing up and going to school in Cape Town, South Africa, Mike fell in love with the outdoors and nature, especially when on holiday at game reserves with family and friends.

Even from an early age, Mike had an eye for wildlife, as he was able to recognize every animal in the ‘Mammals of Southern Africa’ book before the age of three. Aside from his affinity for nature, Mike also had a passion for sports, particularly water polo. He would often spend his free time engaging in his favourite activities, such as skateboarding and mountain trail running.

After graduating from Bishops with a First Class pass and five distinctions, Mike decided to continue his education at Stellenbosch University to pursue a Bachelors in Science with Conservation Ecology as his main focus.

In 2012, he graduated with honours, and the following year he began field research for his Masters at Phinda Private Game Reserve. His research was centered around the population, behavioural and movement dynamics of nyala antelope. Mike was thrilled to be doing what he loved, and he soon made the sand forests of the region his new home.

Sadly, on July 13th 2013, he passed away at the base of iNthabankosi “Mountain of the Gods”, with the peaceful sounds of the wilderness night in his ears.

Despite his young age, Mike has made a lasting impact. His loving, kind-hearted attitude and giving spirit touched everyone he encountered, whether as a son, brother, friend or colleague. He was passionate and dedicated in everything he did, and he continues to be a source of motivation to all who knew him.
